Booster pump

Similar to an irrigation pump, a booster pump (also referred to as a hydrophore or pressure-boosting pump) is a self-priming pump. A booster pump is often used to increase water pressure in a water pipe, but may also be used for irrigating gardens and lawns and supplying water to toilets, wash basins and washing machines.

Why a booster pump?

Basically, a booster pump is a pump that can automatically increase the water pressure in a pipe. Booster pumps are ideal in situations that require constant pressure on a pipe/hose. In case of a pressure drop, this pump ensures the pressure and amount of water are automatically replenished. Ideal for rainwater systems, automatic irrigation systems or general indoor pressure boosting, for example.

What situations require a booster pump?

A booster pump is necessary if you want to automatically pressurise your pipes/hoses so that you always have a reliable water supply. Think of rainwater or irrigation systems, for example. Moreover, a booster pump can also be placed in between your water pipeline at home. This is often done when the overall water pressure is too low. For example, water that enters the pump can be pumped further under greater pressure.  The booster pump thus keep the pipes at a high enough pressure, allowing you to directly experience the benefits everywhere in your home.

Which booster pump should you choose?

Booster pumps are available in three versions: with pressure switch and pressure vessel, with electric controller and with inverter. Depending on your needs, one of these versions will suit your situation best. A booster pump with pressure switch and pressure vessel is best suited for situations where a certain water buffer is beneficial. By default, the pressure vessels have a capacity of 20 litres. However, they are also available in smaller or larger sizes. When water consumption is low, there is no need to activate a booster pump with pressure vessel. For example, ideal in case of drip leakage (think of a sink connected to a toilet or irrigation systems couplings that are not water-tight). Moreover, this version is also recommended in situations with a fluctuating electricity supply. Think of a boat or ship, for example.

The booster pump with electric controller (such as pumps with a Presscontrol / Control-D, the D-EBOOST and the Booster Silent) is ideally suited as a compact booster pump. In the event of even a slight drop in pressure, the system will automatically turn on to provide additional water and pressure. These types of pumps are useful in situations where there is no drip leakage and where water consumption is normal (i.e. no low water consumption). The last type of booster pump is the frequency-controlled pump, such as the D-ECONCEPTS and E.sybox (Mini). These pumps have a variable (rotational) speed, which is to say their speed completely adjusts itself to the water and pressure requirements. Moreover, the version is also fully adjustable by means of a display. Energy efficient, continuous operation, long life span, compact. A frequency-controlled booster pump is the best solution for any situation.

What does a booster pump cost?

Overall quality and features are important aspects that determine the price of a booster pump. Prices vary between approx. € 150 and € 1200. A pump with a pressure switch and pressure vessel is the cheapest. These are already available starting from around € 150. booster pumps with electric controller start around € 200 and frequency-controlled booster pumps around € 500.

Where should booster pumps be installed?

Booster pumps are generally used for two different purposes: as an amplifier between an existing pipe or as a self-priming pump at a source (e.g. a ground/rainwater well, ditch, canal, lake, etc.). If a booster pump is placed as a pressure booster between an existing pipe, it is usually placed in the vicinity of a water gauge (e.g. inside the meter cupboard). After all, the parts of the pipe that come after the pump will experience higher pressures, so it's best to place the pump at the beginning of the pipe. When the pressure booster is used as a self-priming pump, it should be placed as close as possible to the water source. The source in this case may a ground/rainwater well, ditch, canal, lake, river, etc. By means of a suction hose, the booster pump drains water from the source, after which it increases the pressure in the pressure pipe. Such a setup is often used for rainwater and irrigation systems.

To find the booster pump that is most suitable for your situation, there are a number of aspects to consider. For example; what are you going to use the pump for? What is your overall goal? How do you plan to optimally use the pump in your situation?

What should you pay attention to when purchasing a booster pump?

The first question you should answer for yourself is: What am I going to use the booster pump for? A booster pump can be used for multiple purposes. However, not every type of booster pump is suited for every situation. Below is a quick overview of what you can use a booster pump for:

Water pipe circulation in and around your home

Experiencing a low water pressure in and around your home? For example, a weak water jet from your shower or when using multiple taps? A booster pump is an ideal solution. A booster pump can be installed in between the water supply pipes in your home, increasing the pressure in your pipes. Suitable pumps include the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, DAB Easybox Mini and DAB Easybox.

Water in and around your home from a (natural) source

Planning on sprinkling your garden/lawn? Or supplying appliances such as a toilet, sink or washing machine with water? Once again, a booster pump serves as an ideal solution. Every booster pump is suited to for this purpose, each with their own advantages. One major difference: Regular booster pumps are placed in 'dry' areas and suck water from the source using a drain hose. Example of these types of booster pumps include: the Tallas D-BOOST, DAB Aquajet, Tallas D-ECONCEPT and DAB Easybox (Mini). On the other hand, there are also underwater booster pumps, which as the named suggests are placed in the water source. Examples include the Tallas D-ESUB and DAB Divertron.

How does a booster pump work?

A booster pump has a suction and delivery diameter. The pump is supplied with water through the suction diameter. If the pump has to drain water from a source / canal / ditch / pond, a suction hose is attached to this suction diameter. The other end of the suction hose is then submersed in water. Above all else, it is highly important that the entire 'circuit' is completely air-tight. If air enters the suction hose/pipe, the pump will be unable to properly drain the water and will operate far below full capacity. Should air enter your hose/pipe, you should quickly vent it.

How should you optimally use a booster pump in your situation?

Pressure / expansion vessel, required or not?

A booster pump is often equipped with a pressure vessel. This is with good reason. First of all, the pressure vessel prevents water hammer in your pump. This means the pressure vessel absorbs any potential pressure surges or waves. In addition, a pressure vessel ensures you always have a buffer available of 1 litre or more for little to normal water consumption. Should the booster pump be connected to a toilet or washing machine, the risk of drip leakage is high. The drip leakage occurs in the toilet/washing machine's water reservoir. This is not directly visible, however the booster pump must continue to replenish this water. A pressure vessel ensures you always have a buffer available to replenish this demand. This ensures that the booster pump doesn't have to be switched on.  After all, the pressure vessel can use the buffer to pump water without using the pump.

Tip: Even though this is not visible from the outside, the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, DAB Booster Silent and DAB Easybox (Mini) are all equipped with an internal pressure vessel. These pumps therefore include the above benefits.

Noise level

If you place a booster pump in your home, you must always take its noise level into account. After all, you don't want the boost in water pressure to create lots of noise. Several pumps in our range operate at a low noise level, allowing you to experience as little noise nuisance as possible. Examples of pumps include the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, DAB Booster Silent, DAB Easybox Mini and DAB Easybox.

Inverter

An inverter ensures that the pump only runs at the speed required to pump the right amount of water under the right pressure conditions. A frequency adjuster has a number of benefits:

  • High energy saving: A lower speed means lower wattage. A lower wattage means lower energy costs.
  • Longer life span of the pump: A booster pump with frequency adjuster operates at varying speeds. As a result, the pump is not subject to water hammer.
  • Automatic dry-running protection: An inverter guarantees your pump being protected against dry-running. The booster pump will only turn on when it can actually pump water.

Tip: The following booster pumps are equipped with an internal inverter: The Tallas D-ECONCEPT, DAB Easybox Mini and DAB Easybox.

Pipe resistance

The booster pump's delivery diameter and attached drain hose/pipe transfers the water to, for example, one or multiple sprinklers/supply points. It is recommended to use a hose/pipe with an inner diameter of 19 mm or more. This is because when using a smaller inner diameter, the water will experience a lot of pipe resistance. This means the pump will be unable to reach the designated pump capacity and pressure.

Continuous operation

Not every booster pump is suitable for continuous operation. This is where the quality difference of our pumps become most apparent. Every booster pump can run for 3 hours without a problem. However, if you're planning on using your booster pump for longer than 3 hours at a time, we recommend choosing a DAB booster pump. The state-of-the-art technology in these pumps make them suitable for continuous use.

Are there any useful accessories available?

Hoses

A booster pump is useless without proper suction and drain hoses. Our range includes many quality suction and drain hoses, all suitable for use under high pressure and equipped with high-quality suction filters.

Filters

If you're planning on draining water other than standard tap water (e.g. water from a source / canal / ditch / river), we recommend using a pre-filter. The pre-filter is placed in between the suction hose/pipe and the booster pump and prevents any suspended solids (sand, for example) from entering the pump. In other words, the pre-filter keeps your pump in top condition.

Our range includes both pre-filters and regular filters. The pre-filter is placed in front of the booster pump and filters the water before it flows into the pump. This is mainly used in situation where water is drained from a natural (not completely clean) source. The regular filter on the other hand can be installed in front of the appliance to which the water is being pumped. For example, think of a filter against chlorine, odours and taste-influencing substances. This filter is often used in situations where a natural source is used for pumping water to home appliances.

Dry-running protection

A booster pump cools itself with the water that enters the pump. It is therefore very important to make sure the pump only operates when it can take in (sufficient) water. If the pump operates without water, it is referred to as 'dry-running'. When a pump 'runs dry' for a longer period of time, the temperature inside the pump may rise to levels that could cause damage.

Some pumps (such as the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, DAB Booster Silent and DAB Easybox) are equipped with internal dry-running protection. This means these pumps are by default protected against dry-running situations. If there is a risk of dry-running, these pumps will automatically turn themselves off. At the same time, pumps without standard protection can be equipped with a separate dry-running protection system.

Installation kit

Should you opt for the DAB Easybox or DAB Easybox mini and connect it to your water supply, an installation kit can be very useful. The installation kit includes a number of couplings that help connect your pump to your current water supply. Moreover, such a kit can also help in preventing vibration.
