What is a drainage or drain pump?

As the name suggests, a drainage pump or drain pump is a device designed specifically to drain water. The pumps we sell can transfer large volumes of water quickly from one location to another. We offer a wide range of drainage pumps for different applications and situations, including intensive use, different types of water, automatic or manual operation, easy to move or to be installed at a fixed location.

What is the purpose of a drainage pump?

A drainage pump can be used for different purposes, with the most common ones being:

  • to prevent flooding in cellars/basements and crawl spaces;

  • to control water levels in ponds and swimming pools;

  • to empty ponds and swimming pools;

  • to drain excess water from a construction site or a foundation as well as from fields or farmland;

  • to rapidly drain water in emergency situations such as flooding due to heavy rainfall;

  • to drain grey water;

  • to discharge water from wells or tanks.

The drainage pump is a versatile device that can be used in many situations where you need to keep water issues under control and want to protect your property.

How do drain pumps work?

A drain pump is installed in a place where water collects, such as in a cellar/basement, crawl space, or pond. The water is drawn in through the inlet that is situated at the bottom of the pump. The motor inside the drain pump powers one or more impellers that push the water through the pump and then out of it through a hose or pipe towards the desired discharge location.

It is important here to take into account the type of water to be pumped. All pumps can process clean water but not every pump can handle dirty water. This needs to be kept in mind before you buy a drain pump.

The names of the drainage pumps also provide information:

  • FEKA: This refers to pumps that can process very large solid particles, including faecal matter (25 mm - 50 mm);

  • Maxima or Extrema: These are pumps that can handle large solids (30 mm - 40 mm).

What is a float?

The drainage pumps in our range of products are often fitted with a float, which activates the float switch when the water level rises or drops, and automatically switches the drain pump on or off.

There are different types of floats, such as:

drainage pump with sensor float

Sensor float

drain pump with integrated float

Integrated float

drainige pump with float arm

Float arm

drain pump with drifting float

Drifting float

In other words, the float is a component that automates the drainage pump’s operation based on the water level.

Features of drainage pumps

Before you buy a drainage pump, it is good to know the features and advantages of these devices. This allows you to make an informed decision about which of our drain pumps is most suitable for your situation.

We therefore always recommend that you consider the questions below before purchasing a drainage pump.

  • What type of water needs to be pumped away?

  • For what do you want to use the pump?

  • Do you need automatic or manual operation?

  • Are any special features or accessories needed?

  • What is your budget?

These questions will help you to make an informed decision and to select a drainage pump that best suits your situation.

Advantages of drainage pumps

The versatile drainage pump offers many advantages, especially in cases of flooding. These advantages include:

FAQ

What is another name for a drain pump?

There are different types of drain pumps or drainage pumps with different names, such as submersible pump, puddle pump, dirty water pump, sump pump and water butt pump. These devices are similar but are not always used for the same purposes.

A drainage pump is used to drain excess water from flat or low-lying areas, and is usually installed above ground or in shallow water.

A submersible pump is placed entirely under water, and is used to drain water from water sources and wells.

A puddle pump Is an ideal device for draining puddles and very shallow water.

A dirty water pump is suitable for discharging water that is contaminated with solid particles such as sand, mud, gravel, or leaves.

A sump pump is used for pumping water from a collection pit (sump), usually in cellars/basements in order to prevent flooding.

A water butt pump is designed specifically to pump water from a rain barrel (water butt) for, for example, garden irrigation.

Why do drain pumps fail?

In 99% of the cases, drain pumps fail because of trapped air in the pump body. Tilting the pump underwater will remove the air bubbles and allow the device to begin pumping again. Make sure as well that there are no kinks in the hoses or pipes so that the water can move through freely.

How do I know if my drain pump is clogged?

You can recognise a clogged drain pump by:

  • a reduced or non-existent water flow;

  • strange noises that are coming from the pump;

  • the pump becoming overheated;

  • visible dirt in the inlet and outlet areas;

  • the pump vibrating or shaking more than usual.

Can drainage pumps be installed permanently?

Yes, many drainage pumps can be installed permanently. A permanent installation is often undertaken in situations where frequent and continuous water management is required. To prevent flooding or for long-term regulation of the water level, drainage pumps can be installed, for example, in cellars/basements, crawl spaces, or other areas where water accumulates.

What is the difference between a drainage pump and a sewage pump?

Sewage pumps and drainage pumps look similar, the main difference, however, is how they process solid particles. A sewage pump is used for water that contains larger solid particles, while a drainage pump is used for discharging clear water.
