Garden water pump: how it works

A garden water pump is a self-priming pump that is often used for 'irrigating' a garden or lawn, but also for supplying water for toilets, washbasins, washing machines, and so on. This type of pump is popularly known as a groundwater pump. These water pumps are fitted with a suction connection that is usually situated at the front and a delivery connection on the top. The pump is supplied with water via the suction connection, to which a suction hose is connected to draw water from a well, a canal, a ditch or a pond, where the hose end is immersed in the water. In all instances, it is very important that the entire 'circuit' be sealed airtight. When air is trapped in the suction hose/pipe, the pump will be unable to process the water adequately, and will not run at full capacity. However, if this situation occurs, the hose/pipe only needs to be vented. In principle, garden water pumps are easy to install, and should in fact be connected to a source and, if possible, to a system. In some cases, we supply a hose and filter to make it even easier for you to get started immediately. You only need to connect the device to your own sprinkler network or sanitary appliances. Connecting it to a sanitary appliance is only possible by making use of an active system, which can be easily mounted onto the garden water pump. What do you need to be aware of when you choose a garden water pump?

Suction depth

A garden water pump is self-priming, which means that it draws in water through a suction hose and is able to pump the water under a certain pressure. All these types of pumps have a limited suction depth, which has been set at eight metres. This means that - measured from the pump - this is the maximum depth at which it can be immersed in water. Our suction hoses have a standard length of four and seven metres, but can be lengthened by connecting one or more additional suction hoses to each other.

What do you need to do if the pump is not situated right next to the source?

If, for example, a horizontal distance needs to be bridged, you will be able to extend the suction hose by a few metres, and you are advised to do so with a hose of the same diameter. However, keep in mind that, ideally, the pump should be situated right next to the source. A few metres away should not be a problem, as long as the water is not situated eight metres deep, because otherwise the pump still needs to work harder to draw in water.

Which garden water pump is suitable for me?

How does a garden water pump work?

A garden water pump consists of two parts: a motor and a pump body. The motor is supplied via the power net and operates the pump house. The pump body is fitted with an impeller (a rotating disk with vanes), a suction connection, and a delivery connection. The impeller ensures that water is drawn in via the suction connection, and is immediately transferred under high pressure to the delivery connection. If a garden water pump is fitted with several impellers, the water is transferred from one impeller to the next, and will exit the pump via the delivery connection under even higher pressure. Priming a garden water pump can be compared to drinking from a glass with a straw. If the straw has a tiny hole and air can enter, or if it is constricted, you will have trouble drinking or have to try harder. The same applies to a pump, which cannot run at full capacity if it is dealing with a constriction or trapped air. We therefore advise you to prevent such situations by sealing all connections with Teflon tape. Of course, you are free to use other sealants such as hemp, as long as you ensure the connections are made airtight.

What else do I need to look for, and what accessories are suitable?

Pre-filter and pipe resistance

If you use water that does not have the same properties as tap water (e.g. water from a well, a canal, a ditch or a pond), you are advised to use a pre-filter, which is placed between the suction hose/pipe and the garden water pump, to stop all solid particles such as sand from entering the pump. This will keep the pump in good condition. The water is pumped via the pump's delivery connection and the connected discharge hose/pipe to one or more irrigators/sprinklers/draw-off points. In this respect, it would be wise to use a hose with an inside diameter of 25 mm or more, because a smaller diameter will cause considerable pipe resistance. As a result, the pump will be unable to meet its specified capacity and pressure.

Dry-running protection

A garden water pump cools itself with the water it pumps. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that it runs only when the suction hose is immersed in water. If the pump runs while no water is being processed, this is referred to as 'dry running'. If the device 'runs dry' for a prolonged period, the pump's inner temperature will increase so much that it becomes overheated, which could damage it. The Electric Control System and the DAB Presscontrol are both equipped with a dry-running protection system. These products ensure that the pump is switched off as soon as no water is being processed.

Active system

The garden water pump starts pumping when its plug is inserted into the wall socket, and stops when the plug is removed. For some applications, manual operation is not desirable: for example, when supplying:

  • toilets, washbasins, washing machines

  • an outside tap

  • a hand-held sprayer/high-pressure sprayer

In these situations, it is desirable that the pump responds automatically to the water requirement. For example, if you want to wash your hands, active systems such as the Electric Control System and the DAB Control-D ensure that water is instantly supplied. These systems respond to water requirement. If a tap is opened, pressure will drop and the pump has to be activated to supply water, and it switches off automatically when the tap is closed. This enables you to turn a garden water pump into an active device.

Continuous operation

Not every garden water pump has been designed for continuous operation, which indicates the difference within the levels of quality in capacity of the brands we supply. Every garden water pump is able to run continuously for three hours without issues. However, for prolonged use (more than three consecutive hours), you are advised to opt for a DAB garden water pump. Their advanced internal technology makes these garden water pumps suitable for continuous operation, which instantly demonstrates the difference between DAB and Tallas/TIP pumps. However, if no continuous operation is needed, the same quality can be expected of Tallas/TIP.
