Irrigation pumps

An irrigation pump is a self-priming pump that is often used for irrigating gardens and lawns. Nevertheless, such a pump can also be used for the water supply of toilets, wash basins, washing machines, etc. This type of pump is more popularly known as a groundwater pump. Irrigation pumps are always equipped with a suction diameter (often located on the front of the pump) and a delivery diameter (often located on top of the pump).

The pump is supplied with water through the suction diameter. If the pump has to drain water from a source / canal / ditch / pond, a suction hose is attached to this suction diameter. The other end of the suction hose is then submersed in water.

Above all else, it is highly important that the entire 'circuit' is completely air-tight. If air enters the suction hose/pipe, the pump will be unable to properly drain the water and will operate far below full capacity. Should air enter your hose/pipe, you should vent it as soon as possible.

An irrigation pump is fairly easy to install. Actually, the pump should merely be connected to a source and, if necessary, a system's connection piece. Some pumps in our range come with a hose and filter included, making it even easier for you to immediately get started. The only thing you need to do is connect the pump to your sprinkler system or sanitary facilities. The latter is only possible with an active system, which is very easy to attach to the irrigation pump. You can read more about combining your pump with an active system below.

In addition to supplying water for irrigation or filling ponds and the like, irrigation pumps are also suitable for draining lots of water in a small amount of time. For example, if you want to drain your swimming pool or maintain your pond. Irrigation pumps therefore have a variety of uses in and around the house.

Irrigation pumps are available in many capacities. To make your decision easier, our selection of irrigation pumps take into account various potential situations. We have made a general selection out of all the irrigation pumps available. We can provide you with the right pump for any situation. Thanks to our collaboration with several manufacturers, we can also be of service should you be looking for a more specific irrigation pump. The brands we carry are of high quality and often have the best price to quality ratio in their area of application. In order to find the right irrigation pump, it is important that you know what to look out for. Naturally, we would like to help you as much as possible in making your decision.

What should you pay attention to when purchasing an irrigation pump?

Intake depth

Irrigation pumps are self-priming pumps. They suck up water through a suction hose and pump it further under a certain pressure. These pumps all have a limited intake depth, which is set at 8 metres by default. This means the suction hose should never be placed at depths greater than 8 metres (starting from the pump itself). Our suction hoses have fixed lengths of 4 and 7 metres. However, it is possible to increase this length by connecting multiple hoses to each other.

What should you do if the pump is not situated directly next to the source?
If you have to run your hose over a horizontal distance, you can always choose to extend the suction hose by several metres. When doing so, we recommend always using a hose with the same diameter. Bear in mind however, pumps should ideally be located directly next to the source. A distance of several metres from the source shouldn't be a problem. However, if in such a situation the water is located at depths of up to 8 metres, the pump will of course still have difficulty sucking up water.

Which irrigation pump is suitable for me?

We have made a selection of pumps that includes a number of options for every situation, with the main difference between the pumps being their overall quality. All of our pumps are of high quality, however a DAB, for example, is a more high-end device, whereas the Tallas and TIP are somewhat more consumer-oriented models. Should you be looking for an irrigation pump intended for long-term use, we always recommend choosing a DAB. These pumps are suitable for heavier and long-term situations and are extremely durable.

How does an irrigation pump work?

An irrigation pump consists of 2 parts: an engine and pump housing. The engine is powered by electricity and controls the pump housing. The pump housing includes the impeller (a kind of rotary disc with blades), suction diameter and delivery diameter. The impeller ensures water is sucked through the suction diameter and flows directly to the delivery diameter under high pressure. When an irrigation pump is equipped with multiple impellers, the water will flow from impeller to impeller, to then leave the pump through the delivery diameter at high pressure.

The suction connection on an irrigation pump can be compared to a glass of water with a straw. As soon as there's a hole in your straw (i.e. air enters the straw) or it somehow becomes constricted, you will have a lot more difficulty drinking the glass of water. The same applies to a pump; if there's a constriction or air enters the pump, the pump will be unable to reach its full capacity. We therefore recommend using PTFE tape to prevent constrictions and make all connections air-tight. Naturally, you are also free to use any other sealants (such as hemp) instead of PTFE tape. As long it makes all connections air-tight, you should be okay.

What else should I look out for and are there any useful accessories available?

Pre-filter and pipe resistance

If you're planning on draining water other than standard tap water (e.g. water from a source / canal / ditch / river), we recommend using a pre-filter. The pre-filter is placed in between the suction hose/pipe and the irrigation pump and prevents any suspended solids (sand, for example) from entering the pump. In other words, the pre-filter keeps your pump in top condition.

The irrigation pump's delivery diameter and attached drain hose/pipe transfers the water to, for example, one or multiple sprinklers/supply points. It is recommended to use a hose/pipe with an inner diameter of 25 mm or more. This is because when using a smaller inner diameter, the water will experience increased pipe resistance. This means the pump will be unable to reach the designated pump capacity and pressure.

Dry-running prevention

An irrigation pump cools itself with the water that enters the pump. It is therefore important that the pump only operates when the suction hose is submersed in water. If the pump operates without water, it is referred to as 'dry-running'. When a pump 'runs dry' for a longer period of time, the temperature inside the pump may rise to levels that could cause damage.

The Electronic Control System and the DAB Control-D are equipped with dry-running protection. These products ensure the pump turns itself off when there insufficient water.

Active system

An irrigation pump starts pumping water as soon as it is connected to a power source and turns off immediately after unplugging. However, there are plenty of situations to be considered in which such manual operation is undesirable, for example:

  • Supplying toilets, wash basins and washing machines
  • Supply outdoor faucets
  • Supplying hand sprayers / high pressure syringes

In these situations, it is more preferable to have the pump automatically start depending on your water needs. For example, if you're going to wash your hands, you'd like the pump to automatically provide you with water.

Active systems (such as the Electronic Control System and DAB Control-D) allows this. Such systems respond to current water requirements. For example, if you open a tap, the pressure drops and the pump must be switched on to provide you with water. If you close the tap, the pump will automatically turn itself off.

An active system allows you to turn your passive irrigation pump into a more active irrigation pump.

Continuous operation

Not every irrigation pump is suitable for continuous operation. This is where the quality difference of our pumps become most apparent. Every irrigation pump can run for 3 hours without a problem. However, if you're planning on using your irrigation pump for longer than 3 hours at a time, we recommend choosing a DAB irrigation pump. The state-of-the-art technology in these pumps make them suitable for continuous use. This also directly demonstrates the main difference between DAB and Tallas/TIP pumps. If you don't have to work long stretches at a time, you can expect similar quality from a Tallas/TIP pump.

Tips and tricks for installation / first time startup

Before you start installing your irrigation pump, we recommend carefully reading the document included with the shipping confirmation. Below are a number of tips and tricks for installing and starting your irrigation pump. This will help you a great deal in getting your new toy to work. Key tasks include: completely filling the suction hose and pump housing with water, sealing all connections with PTFE tape and gradually starting the machine.
