Used in combination with a water storage tank, increasing water pressure to taps, showers, WC’s and outdoor garden use for irrigation and garden hoses. The pump system switches on/off automatically depending on water requirements.

Water pressure pump

Just like garden pumps, water pressure pumps - also known as boosters or pressure-boosting pumps - are self-priming. The pump is often used to increase water pressure in the water pipes, but also to spray/irrigate gardens and lawns, and to supply water to toilets, washbasins, and washing machines.

Why a water pressure pump?

A water pressure pump is simply one that is capable of automatically increasing the pressure in water pipes in any situation where pressure is required. When the pressure drops, the pump ensures that pressure and water are automatically boosted. This is ideal for rainwater harvesting systems, automatic irrigation systems, or to increase the indoor water pressure.

When is a water pressure pump needed?

You need a water pressure pump if you want to increase the pressure in your water pipes/hoses so that water is always readily available: for example, for rainwater harvesting or for irrigation systems. Furthermore, the pump can also be installed between the water pipes in the house, which is usually done when the water pressure is considered too low. The device is able to pump the obtained/drawn water under more pressure and to maintain the pressure in the water pipes. This ensures a good, constant water pressure anywhere and at any time.

Which water pressure pump should you choose?

There are three types of water pressure pumps: one with a pressure switch and pressure vessel, one with an electronic controller, and one with a speed controller, and the model you opt for depends on your requirements. A water pressure pump with a pressure switch and pressure vessel is most suitable in situations where you like to have a certain water buffer. The pressure vessels can hold 20 litres as standard, but larger and smaller ones are also available. This model pump does not need to switch on for small supplies of water, which is ideal in the event of drip leakages (e.g. a connected toilet cistern, or non-watertight connections of an irrigation system). Furthermore, this model is also recommended in situations with a fluctuating power supply, such as a boat or a ship.

Water pressure pumps that are equipped with an electronic controller, such as the Presscontrol/Control-D, D-EBOOST and Booster Silent, are ideal for use as a compact device. To provide you with water and pressure, the system is activated with the slightest drop in pressure. These pumps are suitable in situations without drip leakages or if no small supply of water is needed.

The last model is the water pressure pump with a speed controller, such as the D-ECONCEPT and the E.sybox (Mini). This model has a variable rotational speed, which means that it gradually speeds up and slows down to the RPM that is required to provide sufficient water and pressure. Furthermore, this model is fully configurable via a display. Given that this speed-controlled device is an energy-friendly, constant, and compact water pressure pump with a long lifespan, it is ideal for any conceivable situation.

How much does a water pressure pump cost?

The price of a water pressure pump depends highly on the quality and its applications, and ranges from about £ 150 to approximately £ 1,200. The most economical model is a pump with a pressure switch and a pressure vessel, available from about £ 150; the booster set with an electronic controller starts from about £ 200, and the speed-controlled water pressure pump from about £ 500.

Where to install the water pressure pump?

A water pressure pump can be used in two different situations: as a booster between existing water pipes, or as a self-priming pump with a water source, such as a groundwater/rainwater tank, ditch, canal, lake, and so on. If the pump acts as a booster between existing water pipes, it should normally be installed close to the water meter (e.g. in the meter cupboard). If at all possible, the pump should be installed at the point where the water pipe system begins, because the pressure is higher anywhere part behind it. If the pressure booster is used as a self-priming pump, it should be installed as closely to the water source as possible. The pump draws water from the source by means of a suction hose, which then puts the delivery line under pressure, and is used mainly with rainwater harvesting and irrigation systems. A few things need to be taken into account when looking for the right water pressure pump: for example, what the pump will be used for; what you want to achieve with it; and how it can be used most optimally in your situation.

What do you need to be aware of when you buy a water pressure pump?

The first question you need to consider is for what purpose will you be using the water pressure pump. A water pressure pump can be used in different situations, but not every type of pump is suitable for the same thing. Below are the things for which a water pressure pump can be used.

Water in and around the house via the water supply system

If you are experiencing low water pressure in/around the house - for example, a weak water jet in the shower or when multiple draw-off points are open - a water pressure pump will be the ideal solution. The pump can be installed between the water pipes in the house to boost the pressure in the water supply system. Suitable water pressure pumps include the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, the DAB E.sybox Mini, and the DAB E.sybox.

Water supply in and around the house from a well/natural source

If you want to irrigate your garden/lawn, or supply water to several sanitary applications such as a toilet, a washbasin, or a washing machine, a water pressure pump will also be ideal. Every water pressure pump is suitable, but each one has its own advantages. However, there is one main difference. Some regular water pressure pumps are placed on 'dry land' and draw in water from the source through a suction hose: for example, the Tallas D-BOOST, the DAB Aquajet, the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, and the DAB e.sybox (Mini). Other ones are underwater water pressure pumps that are immersed in the water source, such as the Tallas D-ESUB and the DAB Divertron.

How does a water pressure pump work?

Water pressure pumps are fitted with a suction connection and a delivery connection. The pump is supplied with water via the suction connection, to which a suction hose is connected to draw water from a well, a canal, a ditch or a pond, where the hose end is immersed in the water. In all instances, it is very important that the entire 'circuit' be sealed airtight. If air is trapped in the suction hose/pipe, the pump will be unable to process the water adequately, and will not run at full capacity. However, if this situation occurs, the hose/pipe just needs to be vented.

How can you make optimal use of a water pressure pump in your situation?

Pressure vessel/expansion vessel; needed or not?

Water pressure pumps are usually equipped with a pressure vessel, and for good reason. First, the pressure vessel prevents water hammer ('blows') in your pump, which means that it intercepts a possible pressure surge that is caused by an abrupt change in the rate of flow. Second, a pressure vessel ensures that you always have a water buffer of one or several litres for small supplies of water. If the water pressure pump is connected to a toilet or a washing machine, there will be a high risk of drip leakages in the toilet cistern or washing machine. This is usually not visible, but the water pressure pump needs to keep supplementing water: for instance, a pressure valve ensures that you have a reserve/buffer available to supplement this water requirement. In this way, the water pressure pump does not need to switch on, because the pressure vessel pumps water from its buffer without making use of the pump.

Tip: Although not visible on the outside, the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, the DAB Booster Silent, and the DAB E.sybox (Mini) are equipped with an internal pressure valve, and they offer the same advantages specified above.

Noise level

When a water pressure pump is placed indoors, its noise level will play a major role. After all, you do not want to be bothered by noise resulting from a boost in the water pressure. Some of the pumps we supply have a low noise level, and therefore can be barely heard, if at all. These include the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, the DAB Booster Silent, the DAB E.sybox Mini, and the DAB E.sybox.

Speed controller

A speed controller ensures that the water pressure pump runs only at the RPM speed required to pump the right amount of water under the right pressure, which has the following advantages:

  • High energy efficiency: A lower rotational speed means lower wattage, and, in turn, lower energy costs.
  • Longer lifespan of the pump: it speeds up and slows down, respectively, when activated or deactivated. This prevents water hammer in the pump.
  • Automatic dry-running protection: A speed controller guarantees that the pump is protected from running dry. As a result, the water pressure pump will switch on only if it can actually pump water.

Tip: the following water pressure pumps are fitted with an internal speed controller: the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, the DAB E.sybox Mini, and the DAB E.sybox.

Pipe resistance

The water is pumped via the water pressure pump's delivery connection and the connected discharge hose/pipe to one or more irrigators/sprinklers/draw-off points. In this respect it would be wise to use a hose/tube with an inside diameter of 19 mm or more, because a smaller diameter will cause considerable pipe resistance. As a result, the pump will be unable to meet its specified capacity and pressure.

Continuous operation

Not every water pressure pump has been designed for continuous operation, which indicates the difference within the levels of quality in capacity of the brands we supply. Every water pressure pump is able to run continuously for three hours without issues. However, for prolonged use (more than three consecutive hours), you are advised to opt for a DAB water pressure pump. Their high-quality internal technology makes these water pressure pumps suitable for continuous operation.

Which accessories will be handy for you?

Hoses

A water pressure pump is useless without one hose to draw in and another one to discharge water. We supply suction hoses as well as discharge hoses, each of which is suitable to be used under high pressure and is equipped with efficient suction filters.

Filters

If you use water that does not have the same properties as tap water (e.g. water from a well, a canal, a ditch or a pond), you are advised to use a pre-filter. A pre-filter is placed between the suction hose/pipe and the water pressure pump and stops all solid particles such as sand from entering the pump. This will keep the pump in good condition. We supply pre-filters as well as regular filters. The pre-filter is placed in front of the water pressure pump and filters the water before it enters the pump. It is often used when water is drawn from a natural, not entirely clean source. Regular filters can, for example, be installed in front of the device to which the water is pumped, to eliminate chlorine, odours and contaminants that affect the taste of the water. This filter is often used for pumping water from a natural source to indoor applications.

Dry-running protection

A garden pump cools itself with the water it pumps. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that it only runs if water is supplied. If the pump is running while no water is being processed, this is referred to as 'dry running'. If the device 'runs dry' for a prolonged period, the pump's inner temperature may increase so much that it becomes overheated, which could damage it. Some pumps, such as the Tallas D-ECONCEPT, the DAB Booster Silent, and the DAB E.sybox, are fitted with an internal dry-running protection system. This means that these pumps are always protected because they switch off automatically if such a situation occurs. Other pumps can also be fitted and protected with a dry-running protection system.

Connecting kit

If you opt for the DAB E.sybox or the DAB E.sybox Mini and connect it to your existing water supply system, the connecting kit may come in handy. It includes several coupling pieces to facilitate connecting the pump to the water supply system and making it vibration proof.
