Replacing an old or defective underfloor heating pump

Replacing an old or defective underfloor heating pump

If your underfloor heating pump, or central heating pump, has broken down and may need to be replaced, it will be important for you to know exactly what is wrong. This article provides more information about this type of pump.

Your underfloor heating does not work; what could be wrong?

There are many reasons for an underfloor heating system to stop working, but what is actually wrong with it?  Sometimes the system does not heat up, and with radiators in the same room, the thermostat switches off when they are at the right temperature. In that case, the underfloor heating system did not have the opportunity to heat up. This could be the cause of the defect or possible error, but it could also involve a loss of pressure. A central heating boiler heats the underfloor system, but if it has no or insufficient pressure, the heat cannot be distributed. The problem may be that the boiler needs to be refilled,  but it could also involve a broken expansion vessel. If you have to refill the boiler frequently, chances are that the expansion vessel is leaking. The vessel may need to be replaced, and can be ordered from us. Please refer to our collection of expansion vessels for one that is suitable for your heating system.

How do you know the underfloor heating pump is defective (indications)?

The underfloor heating pump may be defective and not operate at all, or it makes an unusual sound. If air bubbles are trapped in the circuit, the system will need to be vented. There are a few things you need to check:

  • Is the pilot light on?

  • Is the top tube of the distributor warm?

  • Are the group-shut-off valves open and does the pump work?

  • Does the temperature not exceed 50 degrees?
