What should you pay attention to when purchasing a submersible pump?

Pump capacity

The pump capacity (or discharge) of a submersible pump determines how many litres of water can be pumped per hour. This means without resistance and without upwards flowing water. Alongside the head rate, the pump capacity is one of the most important aspects you must consider when purchasing a submersible pump. After all, you don't want wait ages until your space is fully drained.

Tip: When purchasing a submersible pump, always check the so-called 'yield table'. This table shows how many litres of water the pump can drain per hour at a specific head rate.

Head rate

The head rate indicates how many metres the submersible pump can transfer water through a drain hose/pipe. The head rate is based on a wide drain hose/pipe, with as little resistance as possible.

Tip: Choose a wide margin when selecting your submersible pump. For example, does the water in your pump need to flow 5 metres upwards? Then choose a submersible pump with a head rate of at least 7 metres.

Type of water

The type of water for which the pump will be used is highly important in determining the kind of pump you need. We have classified 4 types of water.

Clean water
This means: clean, clear and (almost) potable water. No to few suspended solids (e.g. sand). This type of water can be processed by any type of pump. In this case, we recommend that you take a look at all the remaining points of attention when purchasing a submersible pump.

Lightly contaminated water
With lightly contaminated water we refer to: water that is slightly clouded by sand or other suspended solids. These solids may not be greater than approx. 10 mm. Examples of lightly contaminated water: flooded basement, bathwater, rainwater mixed with road grime.

Waste water
Waste water refers to turbid water with larger suspended solids. Depending on the type of pump, these can be solids of up to 50 mm. Situations in which these pumps are deployed are, for example, construction sites, agricultural / livestock and industrial activities. The FEKA series is even suitable for pumping water containing faecal matter.

Salt water
Salt water, isn't that harmful? Even for submersible pumps, salt water is a whole separate issue in itself. For situations involving salt water, we have one legendary pump we can always rely on: the DAB Nova Salt M-A.

Automatic activation

How does a float switch work?
For most submersible pumps in our range, we indicate whether the pump 'includes a float switch'. The float switch acts as a kind of switch for the pump. A float switch remains floating on water, so it rises with the water level. Once the float switch reaches a certain height, it reaches the pump's activation level. The float switch then causes the pump to be switched on and continues to operate until the deactivation level is reached.

Activation level
Every submersible pump with float switch has its own activation level, varying from water levels of approx. 8.5 cm to approx. 30 cm. When purchasing a submersible pump, always keep in mind that a certain water level must be present before the pump automatically activates.

Using a submersible pump manually
All submersible pumps with float switch can also be used manually. You can do this by 'fixing' the float switch, i.e. locking it at the activation level. With submersible utility pumps, this can easily be done by turning the lever on the side. For submersible pumps with a loose float switch (such as a float cable of arm) you must fix this by using a tie-wrap, for example. Make sure the end of the float switch faces upwards, so that the float switch activates the submersible pump.

Submersible utility pumps

A submersible pump removes water and can drain a space until a residue of only a few centimetres remain. A submersible utility pump on the other hand can drain a space almost completely dry, with only a residue of 0 - 2 mm remaining. A submersible utility pump is ideally suited for flooded rooms that need to be pumped almost completely dry.

Length of use

Are you planning on using your submersible pump regularly and for longer periods of time (longer than 3 hours at a time)? Then we recommend going for true quality. Submersible pumps from manufacturer DAB are intended for regular and long-term use. Needs lots of draining done? Opt for a quality brand and your pump will stand you in good stead for a long time.

What type of submersible pump best suits your situation?

Submersible utility pump

A submersible utility pump (also referred to as a submersible utility pump or puddle sucker pump) is used in situations where a space or reservoir must be substantially dry-pumped. After a submersible utility pump has done its work, a residue of only 0 - 2 mm should remain. Please note however, a submersible utility pump can only be used for clean and lightly contaminated water. Flooded cellars, rainwater containing street grime, etc. shouldn't be a problem for a submersible utility pump.

Waste water pump

A waste water pump is used in situations that require heavy pumping. For example, when draining polluted water containing sand, faeces, etc., but also ditch or pond water, for example. Think of situations in the construction or agricultural sector.

Clean water pump

All submersible pumps are suitable for clean water. However, there are also clean water pumps, which are especially suited to this type of water. These pumps are compact, have a relatively low activation level (when using a float switch) and have an excellent power to price ratio. Situations in which clean water pumps are used include, for example, the pumping of a rain barrel, a reservoir or container.

How can you optimally use a submersible pump in your situation?

Adjustable float switch

Want your submersible pump to automatically activate at a certain water level? Choose the DAB Nova Up 300 M-AE! This submersible utility pump is equipped with a slide float switch on the side of the pump. Using this slide float switch, you can set the activation level between 8.5 and 25.5 cm. This is a submersible pump with the lowest automatic activation level and is therefore very versatile.

High capacity

Want to drain a room, reservoir of basin as quickly as possible? Choose a submersible pump with a high capacity. Tip: Waste water pumps are usually equipped with a high capacity and are also highly suitable for clean water.

Fixed system in a space that regularly floods

Say you have a space, such as a cellar, that regularly floods after heavy rainfall. Naturally, you'd want to protect the goods in your cellar from the water. However, when you purchase an automatic submersible pump, it will only turn on at a water level of approx. 10 cm. In other words, the pump won't turn on until there's a water level of at least 10 cm in your cellar. That's a bit inconvenient, right? How do you solve this problem?

  • Look for the lowest point in your cellar.
  • If you have the option: Dig or hack a hole in(to) the floor, preferably with a depth of at least 10 centimetres and a diameter of approx. 21 centimetres.
  • Place the automatic submersible pump (e.g. the DAB Nova Up 300 M-AE) in the hole and connect the plug to a power source.
  • As soon as water starts flowing into your cellar, it will automatically flow to the lowest point. Once the hole reaches a water level of approx. 10 cm, the pump will turn on and prevent the rest of your cellar from flooding.

Are there any useful accessories available?

Naturally, a submersible pump always requires a hose for draining water. Our range includes hoses that are suitable for direct use with any of our pumps. Several of our pumps also come with a 10 or 20 m hose, which can be directly attached to the pump using the supplied couplings!

What is a submersible pump?

A submersible pump is a water pump that must be placed in the water. The bottom of the pump has a suction grate, which directly sucks the water into the pump. Once sucked up, the water is transferred to the delivery diameter via the pump housing, allowing the water to leave the pump. This delivery diameter is connected to a drain hose or pipe through which the water can escape.

Submersible pumps are often used for the following purposes:

  • Draining a basement / room
  • Draining wells
  • Draining containers or barrels

Generally speaking, a submersible pump is very easy to use. Like several other water pumps, these pumps do not require extensive installation. Waterpompshop.nl has solutions for all situations. A submersible pump with float switch

Submersible pumps are usually equipped with a float switch (we always indicate whether the pump 'Includes a float'). A float switch ensures that the pump can operate automatically, switching the pump off when a space or bin contains too much water, for example. The float switch also ensures the pump turns on again at a certain water level.

The submersible pumps in our range are equipped with three types of float switches:

  • Internal float switch: Allows the submersible pump to automatically switch on at a water level of approx. 12 - 13 cm. Ideally suited for small spaces.
  • Slide float switch: Allows you to set the pump's automatic activation level, starting from approx. 10 cm. Ideally suited for small spaces.
  • Cable float: Is connected to the pump with a cable. The length of this cable can be shortened, allowing you to determine the pump's (de)activation levels.
  • Float arm: Is connected to the pump and has a fixed (de)activation level.

Contaminated water

Not every submersible pump is suitable for draining contaminated water. Each submersible pump lists the size of suspended solids that may be present in the water. A grain of sand is often no larger than 1 mm, however when several grains of sand clump together, there's often the risk of the suspended solid becoming larger than 5 mm.

The rule of thumb we apply when selecting the right pump:

  • Clean water: Every submersible pump is suitable
  • Clean water with a little bit of sand/gravel: Every submersible pump is suitable
  • Waste water (e.g. sandy/muddy water): only waste water pumps are suitable
  • Water containing faecal matter: Only submersible pumps in the DAB FEKA series are suitable

Dry pumping / submersible utility / puddle sucker pumps

Only a couple of submersible pumps are suitable for draining a space or bin completely dry. That is to say, with a small layer of 1-2 mm remaining, which can then be easily dried using a cloth or mop. These pumps are listed as 'Submersible Utility Pump' on our website. Ideal for excess water nuisance!

Clean water or waste water (containing suspended solids) pumps

Submersible pump for clean water - This pump is especially suited for everyday situations. It is especially useful when dry-pumping rooms where clean or slightly turbid water is present. These include draining creep spaces, garden pools and flooded cellars or kitchens. Waterpompshop.nl offers top range submersible pumps for these situations.

Submersible pumps for waste and clean water - These are submersible pumps that are typically strong and robust. Suitable for pumping both clean and waste water. Submersible pump for waste water - These pumps are equipped with impellers that can break down large suspended solids. These pumps are very strong and robust and are often used in professional environments, such as on farms, during construction and in many other sectors. Usage

A submersible pump is normally used when water must be drained or transferred from shallow sources (up to 7 metres). Many submersible pumps have a float switch than can be turned on or off. When turned on, the pump will automatically start operating at a certain water level. When disabled, the pump can pump spaces dry manually. These pumps are usually used for flooded cellars, gardens, rooms, sheds etc. In addition, they can also be deployed for draining basins, barrels, swimming pools, ditches, canals etc.
