A negative head shower pump is a shower pump designed for situations where there is insufficient or no natural water flow to the shower, resulting in poor water pressure in your bathroom. This happens if the shower head is situated at the same level as or higher than the cold-water storage tank. The negative head shower pump, also known as a universal shower pump, solves this problem and ensures a constant indoor water pressure. Thanks to this pump, you can enjoy taking a shower again.
A negative head shower pump has several important features, making it ideal to use in specific situations. See below for examples.
The pump has a switch that activates it automatically when the water starts to flow;
The negative head shower pump transfers water from the cold-water storage tank to the shower, and is ideal if the shower head is situated higher than, at the same level as, or no more than 600 mm below the tank;
Many of these pumps are fitted with a pressure vessel that acts as a buffer to prevent false activation of the pump;
When the shower tap is turned on, the pump detects pressure loss in the pipe and is activated. The pump continues to run until the pressure in the pipes is restored after the shower tap is turned off.
In this way, the negative head shower pump ensures consistent water pressure throughout the house, even in situations where the natural flow of water is limited.
These pumps are designed for cold-water storage tanks located below or close to the level of the shower head. They operate by creating a negative vacuum that draws water from the tank. Once the water is drawn in, the pressure in the pump will increase and push the water towards the shower. The device is activated by a switch that recognises a drop in pressure when the shower is turned on. You should use a negative head shower pump if the shower head is situated less than 600 mm below the cold-water storage tank or if the natural flow of water is less than two litres per minute.
There are two scenarios in which you would use a negative head shower pump in your home.
In the past, houses in the UK were designed to let water run through the house by means of gravity. Homes and water are used differently today, however, as a result of which the flow rate is nowhere near powerful enough. Negative head pumps are ideal for installations where the shower head or other taps are situated on the same level as or higher than the cold-water storage tank. The pump pushes the water upwards, which is ideal for renovated attics and apartments. Note that a negative head pump can also be used instead of a positive head shower pump, but not vice versa.
Sometimes the water pressure in your home can be too low because, for example, a tap has been installed some distance away or the pipes are old. If this is the case, a negative head shower pump may be a perfect solution. This pump creates a vacuum in the pipe, sucking up the water and increasing the water pressure.
A negative head shower pump can be used for the following applications:
a shower;
a bath;
a toilet;
kitchen taps;
a dishwasher;
a washing machine.
To ensure optimal performance, a negative head shower pump should be installed as closely to the cold-water storage tank as possible. The device should be placed on a firm, vibration-free surface to minimise noise and wear and tear. With a view to maintenance, it is advisable to install the pump at an easily accessible location.
We always recommend reading the manual carefully to ensure that the installation complies with the manufacturer’s guidelines, including proper connections and maintenance.
